The Belles of Three Spires were formed in 1989. Michael Brough was MD of the Sounds of Three Spires Men’s Barbershop Chorus at the time and Michael’s partner Cherry Hartshorn was of the opinion that what the men could do, the girls could do better! She and six of her friends got together in her front room to try it out. The girls enjoyed the sound they produced and so Michael was asked to be their MD. After a while, when a few more members had joined Cherry took over as MD of the Belles.
In 1994, the chorus joined LABBS and formed the Coventry Ladies Barbershop Harmony Club. They performed at their first convention at Brighton, in 1995. Cherry left for Ireland in 1998, and David Morehen became MD in 2000. Paula Williams was then invited to be MD in 2003. During her time with the chorus, The Belles moved from 15th place to 4th place in the national competition. The Belles had arrived!
In 2008, Timm Barkworth became the MD of The Belles. 2009 brought our first success under Timm when we were crowned winners of the Majestic Choir Festival in Torquay and in 2011 we finished the year as 5th place chorus at the Harrogate 2011 LABBS Convention.
In June 2012, our assistant MD Lucy Guess (Edmonds) became acting MD and in 2013 we saw the appointment of Lucy as our permanent MD on 30th January! With Lucy at the helm we have gone from strength to strength and were awarded the awards for The Most Improved Chorus and Most Improved Director at LABBS 2013 in October. We have celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2014 and in 2015 we achieved a score of 72.3% and increased our rankings again for the 3rd year in a row to 7th place. 2016 and 2017 saw the Belles work hard (and play hard) and this paid off at convention 2017 with a score of 72.9% and a placing of 9th in the UK, with our highest score in competition ever and awards for The Most Improved Chorus and Most Improved Director! In 2018, we maintained our position.
